I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to do as you described.

Earlier I was using Audacity with NVDA, got busy and forgot I had the window
up. I had gone back to using Jaws for other tasks. Just now, when
finishing up with Audacity, I realized I was able to use Jaws.
I had used NVDA to import a music file into Audacity, and switched to Jaws
after that.
I was able to then manipulate the file with Jaws, very interesting.
