just a few words about selection in audacity to go alongside what Andrew
has already said, and hopefully not add any confusion.
Say you have a couple of tracks, and you want to apply the fade in effect
to the first 3 seconds of the second track. To specify the audio you want
the effect applied to, you have to specify both which tracks, in this case
the second track, and the time range, in this case from 0 to 3 seconds.
So selecting audio in Audacity consists in selecting both one or more
tracks, and selecting a time range.
You can toggle the selectedness of tracks by pressing enter, and there are
loads of ways of selecting time ranges. Some of these have been covered in
recents posts and Andrew's recent recording.
Incidentally, the command to select all audio (ctrl+A), selects all the
tracks, and selects a time range which covers all the audio in the tracks.

As far as I know, at least this is how things work with other
applications, when you do a control A for select all, you will be selecting
all of the tracks regardless of how many your project has. My own
confusion comes from only having one track while I was experimenting. I
thought that if I only had one track, then I would get the same resolt
whether I simply pressed enter to select my track, or if I pressed Control
A to select all tracks. After all, I only had the one track. But v there
is a difference, because pressing enter to select my track did not open up
the effects, but pressing a control A (select all) did open them up.

Doesn't select all select the entire file no matter how many tracks are in
the file?

Dear David,
Thank you for your great suggestion, although it has now led me to
feel rather silly! LOLL
My effects are working fine now, and I am slowly getting my DAWS
completely set up. I had been recording a track, and then pressing the
enter key to select it. When I checked, it said that it was selected. By
doing this I could raise and lower the track’s volume, move its panning
settings, etc. I could work with the selected track, but I couldn’t use
any of the effects. After reading David’s response, I decided to try
something. With the first track that I had recorded, rather than simply
pressing the enter key to select, I did a select all. Even though I only
had a single track, I still did a select all. Then suddenly everything
started working! All of my effects were there, and life became good!
*smile* I don’t know why a select all would do something that pressing the
enter key would not do, but it’s all working now. Thank you David!

Hi James,
did you try pressing ctrl+A? This selects all the tracks, and selects a
time range - you have to do both to select audio.

folder in Program Files, and all the effects are there. I would have

Hi James,
could you just check whether the problem is that you have no audio
selected. If you press Ctrl+A to select all the audio, are the items in the
Effect menu now available?

Well apparently I have an issue that is defeating me, and I hope that
one of you can help me out.
My problem is simply that when I install Audacity 2.0.6 onto a
computer with XP Professional, it installs really well. I have now
installed and uninstalled Audacity a bunch of different times, and I have

in Windows to the Audacity folder, and there has been two folders that were
created when I installed Audacity. One of the folders is called Plug-Ins,
and the other folder has the name of a particular type of effect file, but
I can't remember what it is, and can not get to the laptop in question
right now. But when I have looked in these two folders, there are a bunch
of effect files. I have done a search, and did not find any other Plug-Ins
folders, or anything else that I thought may be confusing Audacity. I have
gone to the Preferences section of Audacity and have made sure that all of
the effect types are checked, as well as the check box that allows Audacity
to search for effect files the next time it is started. It actually comes
up with a screen that says that it is loading files, but when it is
finished and I land on the track view, I have no effects that are
functioning. I have made sure that one of my sound files is selected, but
nothing seems to work. It is frustrating because Audacity is working
great, other than for the fact that it will not make friends with the
effects that were with it when I installed Audacity.
