The plug-in has a year control and 1930 sounds more like what you're
looking for than a recording from 1980.
You probably want still to apply the telephone equalization.

The voice at the sample position has a lot of distortion and also some
modulation.
You could try the free plug-in from
https://www.izotope.com/en/products/create-and-design/vinyl.html
Crank the year all the way down and it should sound quite realistic.

Cheers
Robert

In that case I would start with the Telephone preset in Equalisation
under the Effects Menu of Audacity.  It gives a quite authentic telephone

sound.

Specifically, I'm looking for a voice that's coming over the phone.

Hi Annabelle

There are many files on the site you gave and my patience ran out
after trying the first one, which featured engaged tones at the point
you nominated.  Are you looking for tones or a voice that sounds like
it is coming over the phone?  I will make some suggestions for voice,
as that is within the ambit of my expertise.

I found a couple of options under the Audacity Effects menu.
Equalisation includes a Telephone option, which is pretty authentic.
I achieved a similar but not quite as authentic sound by using Base
and Treble and pulling out the base.  Knocking off some treble would
improve
that sound.
I
would go with Effects and possibly tweak the Telephone settings if the
sound is not quite what you want.

Hi, it's Annabelle.

I'm wondering, what's the best effects plugin that will make an audio
recording sound like it was recorded over the phone? I even wonder if
there's a special microphone that sounds like what you hear over the
phone?
for example, listen to this recording I got from
http://www.phonetrips.com, specifically at the 16:30 mark, and you'll
hear the kind of sound I'm looking for.
