Sounds like maybe your recording device got unplugged while you had Audacity
open.
Once you've made sure the recording device is connected you can go to the
transport menu and choose "rescan audio devices", or you can shut down your
instances of Audacity, re-open Audacity, and it should work.
Make sure to verify your devices are setup properly in Preferences as well.
