Judy, Robert's instructions for checking whether the mike is muted are what I
would have written in an ideal world. I suggest starting from where he said
"Now for the mike levels."
I rarely get completely stumped by sound card settings these days, but that is
after many frustrating hours. If you have no luck, let us know. I would be
happy to give you a call if you are having no luck. Just let me know where in
the world you are so we can find a mutually convenient time.

Hm, I suppose it said that the recording was shorter than the latency and thus
not audible because it would have been moved before time 00:00:00.
This suggests that the recording stopped almost immediately.
First, deselect any time range (press the home key) and try again.
Check also the input level, you'll reach it as Andrew described earlier.
The shortcuts may not be available because the full set isn't enabled.
To enable it, go to preferences, keyboard and press on the defaults button, a
context menu will appear.

There are essentially three things that must be checked, I'll give
you the direct shortcuts but you could reach them also by the manner
described by Andrew:
- Shift+H: host. Can probably stay as it is. Wasapi has the shortest
latency and greatest bit depth but direct sound and MME would serve
too.
- Shift+I, the input device, should be either mic or line or
something, in any case not loopback or SPDIF.
- Shift+N, the number of channels, for computer sounds, it should be
too, for a normal mic just one.

Greetings to all,
Although I have had Audacity for quite some time and love it, some
basics I haven't delved into.
I use Audacity to record from software or internet, but how do I
change it so I can record from my PC's voice recorder? I made this
change a long time ago so I could record the other way, but don't
remember how I did it.
Thanks for the refresher.
I particularly love that you can change pitch of music. A lot of
second and third generation recordings raise the music pitch, and I
like my original recordings in their original key,so this has been
great to apply to my music collection from the 50s and 60s.
