Hello everyone.

I've become really interested in making sound collages; stories without words, if you will, using audacity and other programmes to mix together various recordings to create a sort of audio equivalent of film. I've dabbled for a long time but am not really experienced with using software to its fullest when it comes to mixing, processing, etc. I feel, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, at somewhat of a disadvantage, not being able to see wave-forms, peaks, clips, meters and so on. To that end, I'd love it if anybody could point me to general articles, tips, tricks and so on aimed at helping out the novice. I'm particularly interested in the best ways in which one can use effects. I find myself overwhelmed sometimes by fields and sliders of whose function I have only the vaguest awareness, and sometimes looking at the mathematical principal on which these processes work only confuses me further as my ability with numbers is sadly not so great (though I'm willing to learn some things). One specific thing I'm wondering about is whether someone has compiled some sort of table showing hz values for common sounds. I'm not sure if such a thing really exists or even how practical it would be, but I find, for example, that if I want to use a filter to remove or dampen certain parts of a sound wave, I'm simply guessing at the frequency ranges that would be required, and the results are often not very satisfying. I should note that I'm at least familiar enough with the trade to know that there's no magical solution and that, for example, the usual "centre-pan removers" that are supposed to do away with vocals in music, at least outside extremely professional circles, only yield so-so results...however, I would simply like to have more control over this sort of thing.

Sorry if this all is a bit vague. I'd simply like to get better at all this.

Thanks and I'd appreciate any help from knowledgeable folks on the list.

JM
