Asuming the attenuator is calculated using sound pressure or voltage, -40 dB is 100 times less powerful (though probably circa 8 times less loud in times of how loud you actually perceive it). Really you want it as loud as it can be without distortion, even though you can amplify it afterwards. I would try -10 dB first (should sound about half as loud).
