it is highly relevant regardless of screen reader.

helpful. While not written specifically for screen reader users and takes
some familiarisation, it has lots of valuable info.

You have touched on the crucial aspect of the process in your question: a
piece of selected audio. Just like in a word processor, to copy (or do many
other things) a section of audio, it must be selected. Audacity provides a
few ways of achieving this. I will summarise the left and right square
brackets (the two keys to the right of the p).
Firstly, the track containing the audio must be selected. Having used
up/down arrows to land on the track, pressing Enter will toggle selection.
Make sure the screen reader reports that it is selected.
When playing, pressing left bracket ([) will put the cursor at that point.
Pressing the right bracket (]) while playing will highlight (select) the
audio from that position to the cursor position.
Pressing either left or right bracket while not playing allows you to set
the left and right ends of the highlight respectively. I will not describe
that process further now, but shout if you need more details.
Having selected the audio you want to copy, press control+c. Then move to
the position where you want to insert it and press control+v. It is
important that no audio at this point is highlighted. If it is, the
material you copied will replace it.
I suggest that you play around with material that is not important before
embarking on a major project. While Audacity has a most useful undo
facility, it is best if you are confident with what you are doing.
