Hi Justin
Is the slider you mentioned in Audacity or in sound card settings? Either way,
if it is on 0 I am surprised anything gets recorded. My suspicion is that you
are looking at the wrong slider, but could well be wrong. The other setting to
check is playback volume. If that is set high, the signal could be coming in
"hot" as they say.

All that said, sound card settings in Windows sometimes seems like a dark art
than a science. That especially applies when there are multiple sources from
which to choose.

I have had good luck recording vinyl in to audacity both with an INport hot
wire and the line-in on the back of my computer. However, in both cases, with
the slider input at 0 I'm still getting all the signal I need. Although I'm
not really hearing any distortion, I would like to be able to attenuate it
further. I will add that I have had these same results with an outboard phono
preamp as well as the built in phono stage in my stereo receiver. I'm guessing
this is fairly common. Has anyone else had to deal with this?
