[audacity4blind] Tips regarding recording of musical instrument playing - at same time, or individually?

Got a connection/friend who might want me to possibly help them record sort of
demo tracks for their band, and while I think some guys might try make use of
multi track sound cards to record separate instruments, like various guitars,
bass guitars etc., this would be a much more informal effort, and if I had to
do it sort of onsite, then I would most likely be making use of my one laptop,
which runs windows XP, and which while it does have a stereo line in, just has
a normal realtek sound card built into it, and was just wondering what form of
approach would be best - maybe start off recording guitar/keyboard one at a
time using a stereo line in jack, while they play along with rest of band, and
then try mixing those tracks together quite quickly/on site, and then play that
mix back to drummer via headphones, and record his part using a form of
microphone, or something..?

Thoughts/suggestions?

Suppose alternatively/initially could just try recording the whole thing in one
go using a microphone that we just tried in various positions relative to
band/practice area, or something..?

Stay well
