The function you're asking for will be available in Audacity 2.3.0 The default
shortcut is Shift+D.
It does roughly the following:
- deletes the audio right of the cursor
- plays a few seconds before the cursor (settable in preferences)
- records from the cursor until you press stop
- makes a tiny cross-fade at the cursor.
I think test versions are now ready for download.

No, not quite right I suspect. Pressing r will append to the track
you are on regardless of where the cursor is. For example, if you
recorded three minutes and then went back to the beginning of the
track and pressed r recording would commence from the three minute
mark. Using the above example, Audacity does not offer you an option
for directly dropping into record at – say – the 2 minute mark. If
you wanted to add something at that point you would have to record on a fresh
track and copy and paste.
I was thinking that you wanted to play the lead over existing
material. To do that, you would go to the appropriate point and press
shift-r.
Remembering that Audacity is a multi-track recorder, that would start
recording on a fresh track.
I suggest you practise with an unimportant recording before working
further on the song. As well as not having to worry about hiss when
recording onto tape, Audacity does have an undo facility. However, it
is best to have a firm understanding of what you are doing before
attacking something valuable.
Again, apologies if I have misunderstood what you are trying to do.

Thanks so much Andrew for responding. Yes, I’m using 2.2.2, Win 10 and
Jaws 2018. I’m assuming you have to go to the part of the song you
want to record on, stop the track, and then press shift R to append to

I am not sure that I fully understand what you are trying to do, so
apologies if the following is off the mark. I assume you are using
current
(2.2.2) or nearly current version of Audacity.
Pressing r the first time will start recording on a fresh track.
Subsequent presses of r will append to that track. I suspect what you
want is shift-r, which will start recording from the current position on a
fresh track.
Therefore, if you have a song and you want to play your lead guitar at
various points, go to that point and press shift-r. Well, you
probably want to start a bit before to give yourself time to pick up
the guitar. You can replace any thumps and bumps while picking up the
guitar with silence later.
I do not use JAWS, so cannot comment on what the scripts add. My
understanding, though, is that they add some convenience features.
Others can comment further on the JAWS scripts. One of the things I
particularly like about Audacity is that it can be used with a screen
reader without having to add extras.

I’m doing a project, and it is going well. However I’m not a good lead
guitar player and have to append to my lead track every verse. Can
someone tell me how to use the append record mode with jaws? Do you
have to have the scripts for this? I’ve been looking for a hot key for this
with no success.
Thanks so much in advance. Digital recording is so exciting for me
after recording on reel to reel. No white noise, yae.
