Karen, press shift-r to record on a second, third etc track.  Default settings 
should let you hear existing track(s).  As you recognised, with just your 
internal mike it would pick up existing track(s) so not viable.

How do I record on two or more tracks. I want to record one than listen while I 
record another on top second track while  listening. I pressed control r and 
won't go to second track and when I tried to do that got to second track 
couldn't hear the first one how do I adjust so I can hear first tradck while 
playing recording the second? Thanks
