Hi Egbert,
if you move the cursor to the end of the audio in the track, then the position 
of the cursor gives the length of the audio (assuming you haven't time shifted 
it).
You can read the cursor position either by pressing [ to open the set left 
selection boundary dialog, or by
going to the selection bar and reading selection start.
To move the cursor to the end of the audio in the track, select only that 
track, and press k to move to
the end of the audio in the selected tracks.

Note that I think there was a mistake in Gale's suggestion: after selecting the 
track, you'd need to select a time range covering all the audio in the track by 
pressing j, then shift+k.
