Hi Don
Ah, you were not where I thought you were. You are correct. In Preferences
the feedback you described is exactly what I get. Instead of going to
Preferences, press ctrl-shift-f6 from the tracks view and shift-tab until you
reach the same options. They are presented better by screen readers there,
albeit that options will be the same.

Thank you Andrew, I'll try to look at it that way.
The fact is, under preferences the screenreader just says "Device," rather
than "recording device" or "Playback device," and just says "Host" before
saying MME or wasapi.
Yesterday I got better results by hitting shift plus I, Today, in trying to do
that I hit control instead of shift and the letter I, and I seem to have
crashed the program.

Hi Don
To clarify, are you describing these items from within Audacity after following
what I suggested yesterday? If so, the screen reader should be announcing each
of those items and not leaving you to guess. Where you get MME, that area is
called Audio Host. Tabbing once takes you to Recording Device. The next tab is
Recording Channels. Then you get to Playback Device.
It is not surprising that choices will vary between computers. Sound cards
differ in what they offer. You are also likely to get different offerings if
you choose Direct Sound instead of MME.
Another consideration, which will not thrill you, is that some features may be
turned off by default in sound card settings. You should be able to get to
that dialog by pressing Windows key and entering sound card.
There are tabs there for playback and record and you need to go into Properties
to check out what is enabled.
Just remember to tell yourself that this is a learning experience and that you
are having fun (smile).

Hi all.
Looking at my laptop which does_ use MME and records off the Internet, I find
something I don't see on my downstairs setup.
After where it says "MME," I tab forward once and hear "Speakers and
headphones." So far, so good. But the next tab forward, on the old computer
I hear "Stereo MIX" which I don't hear on the new computer and don't know how
to get.
I usually hear "No devices found," on that third tab. The first is host, the
next is Speakers&Headphones, the third is the one that's different. The only
one I know the name of is the first one, the Host which is MME. I don't know
the names of the next two tabs.
Thank you for putting up with my lack of technical expertise here.

Hi Don
It is easy to set Audacity to record from your line in once you know how.
Having opened Audacity, press ctrl-shift-f6. Then shift-tab several times
until you reach recording device. Arrowing up and down will will take you
through available devices. If you select line in rather than sound mapper or
similar you should be able to use either Windows Direct Sound or Windows
WASAPI.
Having done all that, press ctrl-f6 to get back to your track view.
Note that line in will not show up unless you have something plugged into it.

Hi Robert
I have to go back to MME because in Wasapi audacity won't record what's on
my cassettes.
MME is the setting that allows me to do that.
I don't love the work around but it's the only thing that works.
I don't know how to do what you said about changing from something to "line
in."

Hi Don
Why do you have to go back to MME?
Just change the input device from xxx loopback to a normal line in or mic.
Should you encounter a device error, check your sound card settings.
Start->(search box)->sound->(control Panel).
Check that recording and playback devices use the same sample rate as your
intended Audacity project rate. Wasapi works best with 44100 Hz and 16 or 24
bit resolution.
Wasapi is by the way the only host that supports 24 bit input. The
resolution in Audacity should always stay at 32 bit, no matter what's the
sound card's setting.

Hi guysThe audacity4blind web site is at
I wrote in yesterday about my recording problems.
Here's what has to happen:
With my new computer which does_ definitely have Windows 7 and Jaws
18 and the latest Audacity, I have to switch from MME to Wasapi if I
want to record off the computer. So far nothing else will work. I
then have to go back to MME if I want to convert a tape from MP3, a
project I've made top priority over the past 4 years as I want to
junk all my cassettes. Said project is almost done so I can keep it
on Wasapi permanently once the project is history.
I'm glad about the advice I got. You guys are aces in my book, and
you know who you are. I'd write and thank you privately if I knew how.
