Hi Cindy,

Yes, AMerican Action Fund is worth it! I worked at a summer camp for blind kids this summer, and all of them were American Action Fund book subscribers. My kids were ages 10-15, but I suppose they hit some of the younger age groups as well.

The fund provides Braille books to kids each month. The books are complete, free, and given to the child for keeps. This is also a nice service because one of the items the fund focuses on is brailling the current, series-type books that sighted kids are reading on a regular basis. They hit the trends like Junie B Jones, Goosebumps, etc. I figure this is important because it provides a good way for blind kids to keep up on series books just like their friends do.

Just my thoughts,

Allison

One problem with donating money is that the
organizations exchange or sell their lists and one
becomes besieged with requests -- all good causes, but
a middle-income person can't donate to everybody.

Today I received a solicitation, (and yet another
beautiful calendar -- that makes 6 or 7) from the
American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults. It
looks legit, but I was wondering what any of you know
about it and if you've benefitted from it. According
to the letter it's "one of the country's most
important resources for Braille reading materials for
blind and deaf-vlind children," and "the largest
resource in the world for specialized equipment for
Braille reading and printing." Alsok they provide
Braille calendars. (I wonder what they do about
picture books; Is it possible to do illustrations in
Braille, i.e., to use dots to outline characters
and/or things like trees and animals in a picture?)

This seems worthwhile to me but I wanted to check it
out. As a side note, apropos of a much earlier
discussion, they capitalize the word Braille.

Cindy
