Hi Roger,

Sending this privately. Yes, the differences between British English and American English are well known and can cause loads of laughter at cocktail parties.

My family had a dear friend named Joan, God rest her. She was British to the core, and even though she'd lived in Rochester for years and years, her accent was unmistakable. One evening, my parents and Joan and her husband Hugh were at a cocktail party and the topic of differences between British English and American English came up. Joan said that when she first came to America, she was astounded to hear people talking about one's fanny so casually.

"You see," she said, "It doesn't mean the same atall in England."

"What does it mean, Joan?" asked my father.

"Oh, George," Joan said and kind of tittered. "I couldn't possibly tell you."

"Oh, c'mon, Joan, you can tell me," he avered.

Joan paused for about ten seconds thinking hard. "Well," she said slowly. "It's not aft, it's fore."

Of course the whole circle of listeners roared with laughter! You can see the trouble that you can get into.

Ann P.
