Hi, Christina,

I saw your answer to the other Lori; this is not my kind of book, and I hope that you will find the right proofer for it!

Hi, Lori.
It's No Humans Involved by Kelley Armstrong.

There were a couple of formatting issues with it as it had some weird font thing at the beginning of chapters. I fixed all
the spots I found while cleaning it up.
The synopsis is below.
Christina

Long Synopsis: = In her acclaimed Women of the Otherworld series, bestselling author Kelley Armstrong creates a present day
in which humans unwittingly
coexist with werewolves, witches, and other supernatural beings. Now, in this spellbinding new novel, a beautiful necromancer
who can see ghosts must come
to terms with her power--and with an evil she never thought possible. It's the most anticipated reality television event of
the season: three spiritualists
gathered together in one house to raise the ghost of Marilyn Monroe. For celebrity medium Jaime Vegas, it is to be her swan
song--one last publicity blast
for a celebrity on the wrong side of forty. But unlike her colleagues, who are more show than substance, Jaime is the real
thing. Reluctant to upstage
her fellow spiritualists, Jaime tries to suppress her talents, as she has done her entire life. But there is something
lurking in the maze of gardens behind
the house: a spirit without a voice. And it won't let go until somehow Jaime hears its terrible story. For the first time in
her life, Jaime Vegas understands
what humans mean when they say they are haunted. Distraught, Jaime looks to fellow supernatural Jeremy Danvers for help. As
the touches and whispers from
the garden grow more frantic, Jaime and Jeremy embark on an investigation into a Los Angeles underworld of black magic and
ritual sacrifice. When events
culminate in a psychic showdown, Jaime must use the darkest power she has to defeat a shocking enemy--one whose malicious
force comes from the last realm
she expected. . . . In a world whose surface resembles our own, Kelley Armstrong delivers a stunning alternate reality, one
where beings of the imagination
live, love, and fight a never-ending battle between good and evil.

I do that because I feel that, if someone from this list volunteers to take
it, it will get the good attention that it needs.
I've put books up on Step One before and some of them were taken by a
proofer who didn't proof them, just approved them.

I also have a book that's been on Step One since early this year. It
doesn't have a hold on it and no one wants to read it,
apparently. *Shrug*

If I ask for a proofer on this list and someone volunteers, I have the
satisfaction and the comfort of knowing one of my
scans is in good hands.

Holds do often reflect a relationship between a submitter and a proofer.
They can often decide to work together on a book or series of books and go
into regular collaboration by email. But it is also the fact that
oftentimes
that collaboration does not exist at all. When someone comes on this list
and says I am about to submit such and such book does anyone want it?; and then places the hold then what is the point? If it is that unimportant who
gets it then why not just put it up for grabs?

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] the story of a proofer

Morning, all,

I'd like to tell you the story of a proofer. This proofer has been
working with one submitter for the past year in making a series of books
available to Bookshare. The idea behind the "Hold For' is that a
submitter can work with a given proofer in a partnership in order to
make
sure that books are submitted in the best way possible. Ideally, the
submitter is able to keep the original copy of the book so that the
proofer can check any errors which occur.

Unfortunately, with this particular proofer, students, concerts,
Christmas
shopping and various other impediments have prevented her from completing
the current book she has and starting on the remaining books in this
series.

Sometimes ideals just can't be realized. However, one thing which is not
being talked about at all, is the relationship between submitter and
proofer. This, I feel, is a significant factor. If there is an active
pair working together, time should not be a factor. I agree that it
should be between the submitter and the proofer as to how long a proof
may
take. During the time the pair is working together, friendships may
blossom. Other books may be comtemplated. Indeed, if the period of
proofing is shortened unduly, you may find that proofers cannot keep up
and they will become discouraged.

I suppose the fact that one may keep renewing books is good because it
does indeed remind proofers that they must work diligently. However, I
believe that a two week limit on 'hold for' books is too short. Optimum
would be two months. After that, they should be removed. I would urge
the Powers That Be to remember that proofers are volunteers. If we were
not, one might expect faster work because that would be our job, but
volunteers have to work as an avocation, not as a vocation.

Now, I'm off to Bookshare to download all the books that are on hold for
me, so I can finish off the series I started over a year ago.
