Hi all,

Original message:
Hi,
That's what it sounds like. Who is this Nicole, Martin, do you know? I'm just gonna go on as I've always done, using discression!

OK, we're still having communication problems. This is because Bookshare staff do not understand how those of us who use screen readers, read. If you will indulge me, I'll explain.

A sighted person reads a page in two ways, by reading individual lines, and also by looking at a computer screen as a whole. These methods of reading make it possible for a sighted person to pick out a tagline from a message without reading the message first. This is not possible for someone using a screen reader. We must read line by line or let our screen readers start at the beginning of a message and continue through the message till we get to the end.

This is why I have been pleading for the past few days for Bookshare staff to identify themselves in their email messages. By this I do not just mean having an official tagline. I mean actually typing something like: My name is so-and-so and I am the director of Whatever. Putting this at the top of the message, as the first sentence so that we can *see* to whom we are listening without reading the entire message. Doing this also alerts us to what part of Bookshare the individual message is coming from, the status of the writer and also introduces him or her to us officially.

Please, could you all do us this small courtesy so that we don't get messages from volunteers like the one above? Of course we don't need Pavi or Carrie to do this, we know them, we know their writing style, but Nichole has just appeared on our horizon without notice. thanks a million.

Ann P.
