If it is any concellation I scanned the book with Kurzweil 1000 version 9
with Fine REader as the selected engine.

Like i said, I was able to open it in word, did the traditional space,
delete space and save method, and then maximized the window to get the
information I needed to submit the book.

Alexis,

What you described about Chicken Soup for the Caregiver's Soul sounds
exactly what I experienced with the book I was working on last week, and am
actually now close to finishing. I don't know what program you were using.
Was it Word? For me it was. I don't know if you could see any of the
screen. I can see a little and on my file all of the text was inside a
different color background. Eventually I was able to determine that the
file was all enveloped in some sort of formatting code. What I eventually
was able to do was to first select all text with CTRL + A. Then I went to
the Edit menu in Word and then down to Clear. The submenu under that is
Formatting, and I hit Enter. This removed ALL of the formatting. And I was
then able to read normally using JAWS. Only problem with this is, I think,
is that some formatting might get removed that needs to be there. But in my
case I don't think so.

I did also learn from the book's submiter Carrie that the book with this
issue was produced by using the program version 8.0 of ABBYY Finereader. I
do not know if that can explain anything.

This is the only file thus far I've had this happen. But it sounded like
what you described.

I can't download another book now. But if no one does that book youmentioned
soon, I will try and look at it and see the file duplicates the same issue.
Although I have to say, I really don't wish to have to do so darn much to
validate a book! It is sort of like having a job as a private detective,
isn't it? (smile) Nowadays it seems there are many more very easy
validates, and for this I am grateful to all of the new scanner submitters
who are doing it in a way that is easy!!

Last night, I validated the new Woodward book. And that was absolutely the
easiest validate I've had to date. Thanks, Deb M!

Thanks.
Rik

I dlownloaded Chicken Soup for the Caregiver's Soul for validation but have
discovered that there are issues between the file and JAWS. I am trying to
read it line by line in order to catch errors; however, JAWS will not read
line by line. The only way JAWS will read is if I'm reading the entire
file. In addition, when I hear an error and stop JAWS, I am unable to move
to the place where I heard the error. all JAWS will say is "blank blank
blank" when I move over a word. I'm not sure if this is due to the way the
file was formatted or what. This is the first time I have ever had this
difficulty when validating for Bookshare.

I've released the book so perhaps someone with a bit more knowledge and
experience will be able to figure it out.
