Sorry for the misunderstanding. I was actually referring to eliminating duplicate books in the collection. If we have "A Cold Heart" A and "A Cold Heart" B already in the selection, it's difficult to know, even with the rating system, which copy is better quality and hence should be retained.

A Cold Heart, incidentally, appears twice in the bookshare collection.

I know that. My comments refer to Robin's comments that someone may submit a duplicate knowing there is a copy of the book already in the collection. Robin said the duplicate might be submitted because the submitter of the second copy has no way of knowing whether the submit is better than the book currently in the collection. I disagree. There are ways of knowing. If a submitter of a bso does not know for sure the bso is better than the original the sensible thing is not to submit. In the most brute force case, read each copy if it means enough to you to submit a bso.

E.,
These duplicates of which I speak are in the collection, not on Step 1.

The cure for this is clearly not to validate a duplicate copy unless it can
be definitely shown to be a better replacement copy. That is the reason
for the inclusion on the form asking if a copy already exists on
bookshare. Using rank spelling available to many of us, it is possible to
tell much about the overall quality of a book. Reading the copies works as
well though it is time consuming.

Basically, if you know you book to specifically be in better shape than the
one in bookshare, submit it with bso in the title to alert the
validator. Validators need to only accept cuplicates into the collection
they are absolutely certain are in better condition than the original
submit. Otherwise it is simply unfair to those submitting a well created
and well validated first copy of a book.
