This seems as good a time as any to mention that for books with the page number at the bottom of the page, you can create a scanner margin at the top of the page to cut off the recurring header. If you're using K1000 or OpenBook, you can find out how your book is oriented and then create a scanner margin at that edge of the scanner. (I don't know about other OCR software, but I would imagine such information would be available from those as well, and they would also have the ability to set scanner margins.) You should scan the page without margins first to make sure you know what the first line of actual text is below the header, then try 0.4 or 0.5 inches and see if the first line of actual text is still there. Depending on the book, you may have to play with this number a few times to ensure that the header is cut off, without removing any text, but I have discovered after some experimenting that 0.5 is a good starting point - assuming that the book is flush against the scanner edge. You shouldn't need to worry about removing titles such as those at the beginnings of chapters, because those are going to be farther down the page than the recurring header, so those will be okay.

This takes only a few moments, but can save a good bit of time for the submitter or validator removing them later. And if neither the submitter nor the validator removes them, and the stripper doesn't get them - a situation I have encountered here before, it will just make a better reading experience for anyone who downloads the book in the future.

Of course, if the page number is at the top of the page, you may not want to set a scanner margin at the top of the page unless you want to reinsert each page number. True, they're not required, but they are definitely preferred - especially if they were there in the first place.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Headers removed

I must say that most of the books I've validated
recently have had most of the headers removed. Kudos
to those people. Sorry I can't name them.
