Hi all,

Cindy, the differences between Science Fiction and Fantasy are sometimes blurred, but here's a pretty good rule of thumb.

Scifi (hardline fans estue this term) focuses on the future or on alternate history. Most usually it has to do with space travel, other planets, alien races, political intrigue on strange planets and the like. It's main tennant is to ask the question, what if X were possible? How would humans react if X was a fact instead of a theory. The other key is that Science Fiction must have a bases in some scientific fact.

Fantasy, on the other hand deals with legend, mythical creatures, and, most importantly magic. By magic I mean that a person or beast can do amazing things by manipulating the real world by use of words. This encompasses all kinds of things like changing the weather, changing yourself into a beast, summoning demons and the like. It uses mythical beasts like dragons, warewolves, elves, chimera, orcs, goblins, fairies and the like. Some fantasy is "sword and sorcery" taking place in some alternate universe where the life style is somewhat medieval and there are kings and knights and the like. Some fantasy is called "Urban Fantasy" because it takes place in modern day and mixes myth with life as we know it. The Jim Butcher novels are a perfect example of this genre. Fantasy usually, but not always, focuses on a quest, and is prone to the use of the old formulae for sagas where a hero goes on a quest and must face verious dangers including a stint in The Underworld.

I could continue, but suffice it to say that these guidelines should be enough to go on with. If you're in doubt ask me or Evan or Kim. We all read both genres and can make a pretty good guess as to what fits where.
