Cindy, it sounds like a great book, and I thought it was really cool when I heard about it on NPR.

Smile.

You know they make a talking map puzzle now, where you cover the right state and it tells you the state name and the capital.

Pretty cool!

But I do want to read it.

So please someone scan it for me.

Haven't even looked to see if it is in my library though I doubt it.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] How the States Got Their Shapes

Ah! I checked my "requesters" list and it was Shelley who requested How the States got their Shapes.

It's an interesting history--for grown-ups, not for children, though it sounds like it, doesn't it. It's 352 pages and was just published in May. It doesn't seem to be on the NY TIMes best-seller list which surprises me a little because of its popularity in my library.

Ive started to read it. There are numerous gray-and-white maps that probably won't scan and would be impossible to describe but they just illustrate the text rather than elaborate on it. Anyone with a puzzle map of the U.S. with cut-out states like the ones we had as children could feel the boundaries that are talked about in the first chapter.

This is a book which, even though I might have already read it by the time it gets submitted and by the time I finish what I'm working on I'd be willing to validate if no one else wanted to, but I'm sure there are history buffs who would be more-than-willing. I definitely recommend it

Cindy
