Rod, Welcome to the list. Even though I think the consensus on this list is that Kurzweil is the best, many use Open Book and most are quite satisfied with it. I certainly wouldn't purchase a new program until I had done some volunteering as a validator or scanner., I really think it is more important to try to learn as much as you can about the equipment you are using. In the case of the word that wasn't right, you probably needed to adjust your brightness setting in the program you were using. Since you asked for a book suggestion to begin your validating experience, I went through the step 1 list and chose Friend or Foe; its category is mystery and thriller. The author is Robert Cawley who is not familiar to me, but the long synopsis sounded good. The book was rated excellent (of course this is just the submitter's opinion) and he gave his E-mail address which can be important if you run into any problems. The book is near the end of the list, has been there since some time in April and no one has tried validating it yet. It is in RTF format which is also important. Good luck!
