Thanks for the kind words, folks. Haven't figured out what to do, but it seems likely to boost my efforts to get high tech people to do more for society. I was just at Google today asking them to help with Bookshare.org on the content side. I am planning on writing a book (and posting it here when it's done) on the area of technology for social change. And, I will definitely travel more with international Bookshare.org as a big part of my agenda. And, I'm still working to get more of the technical improvements that Janice and her team have (long) been asking for: we're currently recruiting at least three developers. Jaws read, She looked down appreciatively at his 186 muscular legs. *** golf dubs for golf clubs and They met him at his dub. *** for Snakes I got a few snakss pronounced snacks by Jaws. Bess continued to scream and pointed at the branches of trees over their heads. Large black snakss were falling from them in profusion! *** and last, more snakss *** Burt and Dave jumped to help him. Burt grabbed the snaks just behind its head, while Dave closed his fingers around the body near the end of the tail. Bess was still screaming, with the result that all the other snakss scurried off into the underbrush, apparently frightened. I'm sure you'll find your way out of limbo, Shelly, and soon, I hope. Thought you should know that Bookshare.org's founder, Jim Fruchterman, was named a MacArthur Foundation "genius" Fellow yesterday for his work in using technology for the benefit of many. In particular, the MacArthur Foundation chose Jim for his work in creating affordable devices that aid the visually impaired and others underserved by traditional commerce. Please join all of us at Benetech in giving Jim a big round of applause! Three locals among winners of $500,000 'genius grants' Posted on Tue, Sep. 19, 2006 San Jose Mercury News, By Karen de Sá A Silicon Valley entrepreneur disillusioned with technology for profit. A chemist tackling infectious disease among the rural poor. An aviation engineer plotting collision-free skies. These are the Bay Area winners of this year's MacArthur ``genius'' grants, announced today by the Chicago-based John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The $500,000 awards herald some of the nation's most creative thinkers across a variety of disciplines -- professionals who further the foundation's goal of fostering``improvement in the human condition.'' This year's 25 winners will receive no-strings-attached support for five years. The Bay Area is typically a MacArthur-rich area, and this year is no exception. James Fruchterman, 47, of Palo Alto, is an electrical engineer who adapts technologies into affordable devices for the blind. Victoria Hale, 45, heads a ground-breaking non-profit pharmaceutical firm in San Francisco that develops drugs for populations in Asia and Africa. And Clai re Tomlin, 37, is an aviation engineer at Stanford University and the University of California-Berkeley who uses mathematical principles to help pilots and air traffic controllers avoid mid-air collisions. All three researchers are expanding into new areas of research and application. This mirrors the goals of the 22 other MacArthur fellows nationwide, who include a sculptor, a country doctor, a jazz violinist, a journalist and a deep-sea explorer. For Hale, CEO of OneWorld Health, news of the MacArthur grant added to a week of good fortune. This month, the Indian government approved use of an injectable antibiotic her firm developed for treatment of a deadly parasitic disease known as ``black fever.'' Hale's firm has been studying the drug's effectiveness for two years. Fed by extreme poverty among people who live in mud huts or under thatched roofs where tiny sand flies live, the disease kills at least 1 million people each year. But there's been little incentive for drug companies to develop treatment, Hale said. Most black fever patients are too poor to pay for life-saving medications. In a clinical trial Hale has overseen in the Indian state of Bihar, 95 percent of patients treated for visceral leishmaniasis were cured after treatment with paromomycin, an injectable antibiotic which is no longer under patent. OneWorld Health will now contract with Indian manufacturers to distribute the drug to sufferers of the illness -- the second most deadly parasitic disease in the world, following malaria. The concept of a non-profit pharmaceutical is so novel -- and potentially so expansive -- that Hale said she is now flooded with new opportunities, in addition to malaria and diarrhea projects already under way. Hale's strategy in India as a Westerner wanting to avoid ethical and ethnic conflicts was to ask questions and ``then shut up,'' she said. Now, she plans to listen to her own thoughts. ``I need some time away to reflect on what we've done and consider and envision where we can go in the future,'' she said. ``We could get really big, really fast -- but how big and how fast? I need to be able to be the CEO instead of the project team leader.'' Fruchterman also will use his MacArthur fellowship to serve populations left out of the global marketplace. The founder of the non-profit software firm Benetech has designed reading systems for the blind using optical-character-recognition technology. His work has been reproduced in 60 countries and a dozen languages. Fruchterman also developed a secure, computer-based reporting system for organizations collecting information on human rights violations, as well as a state-of-the-art land mine detector for war-torn countries. There are very few high-tech entrepreneurs who have shifted to non-profit social ventures, Fruchterman said, and he is pleased the MacArthur fellowship has recognized him, particularly because he hopes to write a book and inspire others. ``I'd like to he lp people not be as lonely as I was the first few years,'' he said, ``feeling like I was the only guy in Silicon Valley not trying to make a billion dollars.'' Like the other Bay Area MacArthur fellows, engineer Tomlin also plans to expand her research. Tomlin's focus to date has been aircraft technology. But with MacArthur funding and the stretch of imagination typical to the foundation's awardees, she hopes to extend her work into biology -- using mathematical models to help understand how cells communicate. I have a story to tell and how to illustrate a good advantage for doing just that. I borrowed from my local cooperating branch a copy of Rilla of Ingleside. It arrived her the other day and I popped it into the player, have been wanteding to read this and had Just finished Rainbow valley. Well... the tape was old, and warped, and no matter all the "usual" tricks, I couldn't get the tape to play properly. So... after being disgusted by it, putting it back into its little green box, slapping the string on the latch and thinking I would call them today about it, I had a brainstorm. I got online, found Rilla of Ingleside in the Bookshare collection and grabbed it, popped it into the book courier and all was well again. I do like listening to human readers though some of them are quite grating on me, but I still like the flexibility of choosing what format works best for me. Smile. I looked for Kipling and there was only one volume very well recorded but when I wanted to hear it again It had disappeared. I got rfb to record what turned out to be the complete kipling but then had to deal with people reading poetry with no real knowledge of how to do it and with difficulty pronouncing some of the Names and names of places - understandable if you are not familiar with India or 19th Century British army terminology. Though even today I would guess it would not be hard to find kids who have read the poetry in The Jungle Books or the Just So Stories or their parents, too. I appreciate the work rfb volunteers went through to record that tome but I wanted the poems as he wrote them so I scanned the book with Kurzweil and am now trying to make sure the poems scan properly (scan as in lines as K wrote them of the length he wanted them). I may have to submith the Kurzweil copy which scan (copied) the pages correctly but they don't always come out that way and I was warned that theBookshare computer would ignore the lines much as they did in other books of poetry I have gotten but I can only try to get someone to realize the importanct of the lines. However, I have hopes even If I cannot do it. In any event it has to be better, even with a computer voice, that what I heard. in the well meant recording. Before I used tabs, but quite a bit after that we were told that tabs don't do any good. Too bad, because that was so easy. However, there is a way, though it takes longer, to re-set the line margin. I'd use the space bar, which would be easier, but somebody mentioned that the spaces are annoying. Is that just for those of you who listen, or also for those of you who use braille? Is there a way you can turn off whatever is annoying about the spaces? Using spaces to indent lines of poetry would be so much easier, less time-consuming, than using the line setting. smile Cindy --- Amy Goldring Tajalli <agoldringtajalli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > amen. There's another copy sitting in the admin pool. There's one in the rejection pool because two copies got submitted to the system. So, there isn't a need for anyone to resubmit anything, smile. And yes, the rejection pool has to be processed just like the admin pool, Gustavo must go through each rejection and decide whether the volunteer has done things correctly. I want to go purchase all of the top 100 that aren't on Bookshare, and get them scanned. I'm contrary like that. Besides, many of these are excellent reads that should not be denied to us or anyone else. People were saying they preferred paragraph indenting to skipped spaces between paragraphs, and sometimes skipping lines, especially if there's a lot of dialogue, gives pagination problems, even when I try to length the page. Then there's no way to format poetry? Would you please download And Still I Rise, by Maya Angelou, and also Silk, by Baricco and tell me what they look like? Or sound like? Silk isn't a poem but was written sort of like one so I validated it keeping the author's line lengths. I think I used tabs, though. I didn't know about adjusting line length using the line indentation setting in paragrpahs in the format file. I can't think of any poems I've done recently except for quotations as part of something else. Perhpas if you have time you could download Transit of Venus and check page 81 and see if the quotation at the bottom of the page is indented. Maye fixing things so tabbing doesn't appear should be put higher up on the Wish List. Amy's right about the importance of poetry being formatted correctly, especially for students. I wonder what the Chinese poetry I did a few years ago looks like--and I spent so much time trying to get that right. sigh Cindy > > You'll probably find that paragraph indenting is > gone as well. > > Jake > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Cindy" <popularplace@xxxxxxxxx> > To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> > Sent: Tuesday, September 19, 2006 6:01 PM > Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Kipling's--and > others'--poetry > > > > Amy, > > > > If you can submit it in rtf I can format poetry as > the > > author intended. > > > > Before I used tabs, but quite a bit after that we > were > > told that tabs don't do any good. When her elderly husband's inability to sire an heir threatens everyone she cares for, young Rosamunde Overton is forced into a daring deceit at a scandalous masquerade. But then her nerve fails and she flees, ready to give up all hope...until she rescues an injured nobleman who just might be the answer to her prayers. Although Lord Brand Malloren lives far above the station of the mysterious lady who has taken him captive and captured his heart, he's only too willing to follow her lead. Rosamunde too has fallen in love, but her reckless plan depends on secrecy. For to reveal herself could cost her everything. Devilish also by Jo Beverley Two of the strongest wills in England clash when Lord Rothgar is commanded by the king to escort the fiercely independent Diana Westmount, the Countess of Arradale, to London. Though Rothgar, tortured by a tragic secret, has become a master of resisting temptation, Diana proves a challenge to his steely resolve. Then his icy self-control melts in a moment of peril-and a night of passion-and he must find the strength to surrender his heart to another.... Devilish was a RITA award winner in 2000. So apparently the page breaks got lost while you were editing. If you're not aware of anything that you did that would have removed them, then you might wish to ask this list for help by describing your editing process. Just reading the 100 most challenged books is disturbing to me. Many of these books are books I read as a young girl. I want to go purchase all of the top 100 that aren't on Bookshare, and get them scanned. I'm contrary like that. Besides, many of these are excellent reads that should not be denied to us or anyone else. PS: Unfortunately, I'll probably contribute my contraryism a few books at a time so that the budget doesn't crumble to bits. -----Original Message----- From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Shelley L. Rhodes" <juddysbuddy@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Book submitted: All Things Herriot I am slowly trying to knock down the pile of stuff on my Compact flash card, the poor thing takes forever to load as it is so loaded with stuff. Course, I should stop scanning new stuff to add to it right? Anyway, this was one of those books that sounded great, so I borrowed it, scanned it and found it wasn't exactly my cup of tea at this current moment. Smile. Is a commentary as well as biography of John White, also known as James Herriot and his writing. See synopsis below. It sounds great but not something I wanted to read right now. I do hope someone will give it the TLC and make it into a perfect book which I know it could be. From the book Jacket: Millions of people, young and old, the world over, love James Herriot. He is their friend. They feel they know him as one might know an uncle or a neighbor. They wish they had a doctor like him, one who really cares and makes house calls. They are more familiar with "his" life than they are with the lives of political leaders. All Things Herriot is the first fulllength book about this best-selling author, whose work, adapted for television, has swept through the world in one of the most popular and enduring series of all times: All Creatures Great and Small. Sanford Sternlicht offers a comprehensive, upto-the-moment evaluation of the Herriot achievements, and it offers the most detailed biography of the real Herriot, James Alfred Wight, in print to date. He explores how this goodnatured veterinarian came into existence and how he developed over the course of the series of books. How and why Herriot made the transition to television is examined as well as the effect the shows had on audiences. This is the story of the "creating" of James Herriot, how he captured the imagination of popular culture. This simple man, with his profound love for all creatures in his peaceable kingdom, has earned for himself a secure and enduring place in the hearts and minds of readers and viewers. Sanford Sternlicht is part-time professor of English at Syracuse University and a poet, critic, and theater director. His books include C. S. Forester, John Galsworthy, R. F. Delderfield, and Stevie Smith. He has also edited a series of books collecting the short stories, poetry, and plays of Padraic Colum, as well as a book on the life and works of Stevie Smith Shelley L. Rhodes B.S. There ought to be some way that the geniuses at bookshare - I mean the ones that program their computers - could program the computers to recognize indentations, be they tabs or spaces or periods but something. even wordperfect got those right even when they could not get 2 pp. of print the same size. The pages of poetry I vallidated with Kurzweil were easy to correct the few where the scansion was off. What do the publishers tell their computers ? I will download the books you mention as soon as I can download anything. I have VRS again and the Unpack and I have finally gotten rid of Openbook and the voice that came with it which may have been why I could not get VRS when I tried it earlier this week. So I now have now other reading program except Viktor and I need some pure escapism and tried to downloard Mary Stewart's Merlin quartet but nothing happened. I wrote John and then tried his suggestions but still no good. So I am waiting to hear back again. In the meantime, I submitted the Kurzweil scan of the Complete Verse of Rudyard Kipling, the Definitive Edition or, as I call it, the good, the bad, the ugly, and the really great. But trying to work on it with the programs I have was masochistic. I don't know how it will be to try and validate an rtf file originally from something other than Kurzweil I tried it with Openbook so I don't know if it would have been different with a book that was scanned by openbook. I will wait for now until I find out how to use the programs I have which I hope will be soon as there are books I already know I want to validate and have agreed to do so as soon as I can. Tolkien and Faulkner among them. Wwish me luck and feel free to try the Kipling if it is accepted. Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2006 23:34:43 -0500 Matthew, You need to find another program to do your validations in. WordPad is responsible for the lost section breaks. It appears to discard them when opening the file, so as long as you're validating Carrie's books in WordPad, they will be kicked back due to no page breaks. You might be safe doing books submitted by others, but I wouldn't chance it since I didn't see a way to determine if the book has page breaks or not. I did verify that WordPad doesn't discard them, though. Still, you need a way to determine whether or not they are there in the first place. BTW, Carrie's message about ^b and ^m was instructions about how to convert section breaks to page breaks in Word using a global search and replace. I tried to see if the section breaks were in the file and if WordPad would convert them to page breaks before saving the file, but it doesn't appear to support replacing the format characters the way Word does, or they just aren't there in the first place due to WordPad discarding them when the file is opened. I suspect both. Hello, I only have Wordpad, so I didn't see any caret symbols. I corrected some scanning errors, such as a few words which ran together, as well as a few letter I's which were picked up as 1's. Does this mean that the corrections were all for naught? I enjoyed reading the book, and still have my corrected file, but I don't want to go back and read the whole book to fix those few errors, and couldn't point a new validator to each correction. At the start of the book, there were the words a very, which ran together, and I think it picked up a the wrong. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? It's animated, but it was true to the story. My husband and I will read A Wrinkle in Time with our kids when they are old enough. No ill effect for either of us. Hi Matthew, The OCR program at the Bookshare office puts section breaks between pages instead of page breaks (I have no idea why). To convert the section breaks into page breaks, do a global replace from ^b to ^m (if you're using Microsoft Word). HTH, Carrie Matthew Bullis <matthewbullis@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote: Hello, I didn't remove the page breaks. It had the page numbers, followed by a space, and a bullet. I don't know what else to do. I really like the Children's theater. It's so good that once in a while I want to borrow a kid just so I have an excuse to go there. <grin> Kellie ------------------------------ From: "Kellie Hartmann" <hart0421@xxxxxxx> Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: NLS's Tapes and electronic files Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2006 22:02:09 -0500 Hi Kasondra, It's the last book in the Anne of Green Gables series. I loved the movies made from that series even though I usually hate movies based on books because they're not like the book. Even my stepdad liked the movies and he really doesn't like chick movies flicks o these must really have universal appeal. Someone else will need to validate the book and fix the minor errors. I don't have Word. How come we need the print page breaks? This novel doesn't have an index. Thanks a lot.
