Hi, Gary. I do see your point. I think most of us try to avoid guessing at actual text when cleaning up a scan. We can't avoid it altogether since we do spellcheck the text. If I find parts of sentences missing, I don't just guess at what is meant. If there are too many of these messed up sentences, I reject the book. It is true that we have to guess sometimes if a page number hasn't scanned or if the words of a sentence are out of order. If I'm not absolutely sure of a word, I don't change the text from a scan. I hope that one day we'll be able to just get the text of books from the publisher, making the whole scanning process unnecessary. It is the only way to make sure we have totally error-free copies of books.
