Volunteers,

You will shortly see something new in the Book Checkout List. I wanted to alert
you so you are not confused.

So far this month Bookshare has received 136 new volunteer sign ups. Since we
prepare a book for each individual new volunteers the sheer volume of
processing has bottlenecked that system. Fortunately we had previously decided
that to begin assigning the same book to every new volunteer. That new practice
begins today.

The name of this new book just for beginners is "Summer of Secrets ." You will
see dozens of copies in the List in this format:

Hold for [volunteer name]: Summer of Secrets

for example:

Hold for Jane D.: Summer of Secrets

We know that adding so many copies of this book could be confusing. If you are
browsing for a new book to work on you can sort the checkout list by title to
gather all reserved "Hold for..." books into a block that you can then skip.

In the end, this gives our new volunteers an extra training step. We have
intentionally left a scattering of typical scannos in the book. Rick has
written a new section in the training manual to step volunteers through their
first book and we will be recruiting volunteers to help grade submissions.

On another note, several of you may have books checked out that are about due
for renewal. If they are likely to come due while you are away for the holiday
Carrie encourages you to contact her so she can renew it for you before the due
date.
