Hi Roger!

I have always thought that Roman numerals were such a clunky system of numbering.

Maybe the publishers should go to the Pathfinder school of page numbering, (smile).

Obviously they don't, but the practice of preliminary Roman numerals and not beginning the page numbering until well after the book has begun has always annoyed me even back when I was reading with my eyes. It is such an engrained practice that I don't expect it to be changing soon and even if it did it would not change all those millions of millions of books that have already been published, but if I happen to be proofreading a book without page numbers, which I haven't so far, I would gleefully jump at the chance to start numbering them from the beginning. By the way, I am currently scanning a book which does, thank goodness, start page numbering from the first page. I think that is standard practice at Pathfinder Press. Hi Roger!

I guess the publishers don't think the title page, dedication and stuff like that deserves a page number. It would be nice for us proofreaders if there was a standard for page numbering.

It is your choice, from what I know, where to start numbering. If there is no contents and no numbers, I usually start after the copywrite page, but some books lend themselves better to the start of the story. I believe it is a discretionary judgement call, but someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Hi everyone!

I haven't experienced a book with no page numbers, since I have never scanned any children's books. I'd like to know how this is handled in case I ever have any children's books to scan. Do we number the pages so that they can be navigated better in daisy?
