One thing to try is to copy your current .dbx files to a safe place, restore the .bak files and rename them from .bak to .dbx. If that doesn't work, you can copy your current mail files back with no loss of those at least.

You don't have to know what the original error was. If they are in there, you can import them back again. All this assumes they weren't corrupted, of course. If the folder compaction was actually happening when the shutdown occurred, then you may well lose one or more of your folders. I know because it happened to me. If you are sure they are in your Recycle bin, go into OE and arrow down to Import on the File menu and follow the prompts in that dialogue box.
