If it is really parallel, and not SCSI, which can have a connection that
looks similar, it is going to be encredibly slow.
HP's website has drivers for older scanners, so it should be possible to get
a hold of them, but your friend will have to find out the exact model number
of the scanner first.  If you send me the number I am willing to check out
what drivers are available if that'll mean a new volunteer. :-)
