There are two books that I can think of right off the bat, that without the
descriptions of the pictures would be completely meaningless, o.k. three
books.

So even though we may not miss them, or not normally need them, sometimes
and especially with a lot of children's books, they are important to the
story.

Officer Buckle and Gloria is a prime example, as if you didn't know what
Gloria was doing in the pictures you would have no idea what caused the
problem in the story, how it was solved, and what happened as a result of
the solution, basically no story.

Bailey Bymyside is another one, where the meaning of the text is interpreted
from the stories in the pictures. For example, one of the pages says
something like.

You must endure things that are unpleasant for those who you love.

Which is all fine and good, but the humor of the picture, is you see these
white suds, and in the next picture a very unhappy golden retriever getting
a bath, which my golden would tell you is pretty unpleasant, smile.

So... but again this may be because I have seen pictures, and I am also a
teacher who was trained that to sighted students having a picture
description or the background of a story ahead of time helps in the entire
literacy experience.

Personally, I don't really find it frustrating. If you've never seen
pictures, you can't really miss them. A lot of sighted people feel bad that
I can't see pictures, but I really never think about it. Maybe if one could
see pictures at one point in your life... maybe then it would be more
frustrating for some. But I could see pictures when I was younger and I
still don't
miss them. But this is just me. They're still important to include because
some people like them and perhaps kids would especially enjoy them. I don't
know.

Judy, we all really do appreciate your work though.<smile>.

Best,
Allison
