To quote a line from a Tom-Lehrer/Electric Company song, "Carefully, carefully, careful - ly." Seriously, though, I don't know of any way other than by reading and eliminating as you go. I had a problem with one book with el's -- there were the long lines at the end of the sentences that seemed to be part of garbage -- you know, like the one that is above the reverse dash on the keyboard. After being tired of eliminating them one by one, I copied what I thought was a double ||, pasted it into the replace and replaced it with nothing. Then, as I read along, I discovered that, in the font I was using, they had been el's. I had to do a search for all the words that might have a double-el in them and put the els back in. That taught me to be very careful and not take a short cut unless I was very sure it was safe.
