I suppose we shouldn't forget Saturnalia. That is what Christmas is a continuation of and it is from Saturnalia that most of the festive traditions of Christmas come. The rest of the festive traditions come from Yule, but I suppose that is really just another word for winter solstice. Here is a quote from Robert G.
