I seem to be getting two spaces on Bookshare books unless I don't get any at all; this also seems true with NBP's Syndicated Columnist Weekly. I'll need to check more Web Braille books. This is all proving quite interesting. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Evan Reese" <mentat1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

I'm not getting four spaces, only two. Except one book, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, which was weirdly done such that every line has a space at the beginning of it, in which case paragraphs are indented two more spaces to give a total of three. It may depend on how old the book is, and perhaps what agency did it. Some of the older ones may not have come out right in their journey from whatever they used to create them to my Braille display. But I downloaded three of the Harry Potter books produced by National Braille Press and they all had paragraphs indented two spaces. Is it possible that your BrailleNote is adding it's own indentation on top of that which is already there? I imagine it could be programmed to do that. If you get four spaces on Bookshare books, then that might be the explanation; because I've seen quite a few more brf files from Bookshare than I have from Web Braille, and they always have two space indentation for each paragraph.Evan----- Original Message ----- From: "Jill O'Connell" <jillocon@xxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, July 31, 2007 6:12 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Paragraphs in Blue Like JazzYou're absolutely right which just shows how observant I am. My excuse is that one isn't all that aware of empty cells at the beginning of a paragraph because only one line at a time is showing. The BrailleNote ends up with a lot of short lines because it doesn't have 40 cells; it's the only reason so far that I wish I had a Pacmate since the main thing I do with my BrailleNote is read. I find that in a web braille book I have four empty cells at the beginning of a paragraph. Is that what you have on the Pacmate? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Evan Reese" <mentat1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, July 31, 2007 3:20 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Paragraphs in Blue Like JazzI have a 40-cell Braille display, and the five web Braille books I have read so far have indented paragraphs. They also have centering of chapter titles and other headings. I can see why centering of headings would be off on a shorter display, since the books are formatted for the Braille page, but I wouldn't expect paragraph indentation to depend on the length of the display since it's still the same two spaces at the beginning of each paragraph.Evan----- Original Message ----- From: "Jill O'Connell" <jillocon@xxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, July 31, 2007 2:07 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Paragraphs in Blue Like JazzCindy, I'll take your word for how print books are done as I really only look at them to find incorrect or missing words. I was basing what I said on the fact that when we compose on the keyboard, we make two carriage returns to denote a paragraph so I assumed books did that as well. It is also true that if we are embossing a print document in braille, the paragraph will be indented. However, as I said before, the BrailleNote doesn't show that, and it doesn't show it in WebBraille books either because only 18 or 32 cells are present whereas the braille book is in, I believe, a 38 cell line. I agree with E; I think Bookshare needs to give direction so you can use your perfectionistic tendencies in more productive ways. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Grandma Cindy" <popularplace@xxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, July 31, 2007 12:59 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Paragraphs in Blue Like JazzHi, Jill. Interesting. I've never seen a print book that uses a blank line to denote paragraphs, and I've done a *lot* of reading in the last 65 or 66 years of my life (I don't remember at what age I started to read, so I'm subtracting some years, not to be accused of hyperbole--grin). There are lines skipped--usually two or three--between sections, to indicate more of a change of subject or location or speaker than is indicated by a change in paragraph, but otherwise, except perhaps in children's picture books, paragraphs are indented, as far as I've seen. As for bookshare, a few years ago I asked people on the list if they preferred to have paragraphs indented or lines skipped between them. I didn't receive that many answers, but of the answers I received, more preferred indented paragraphs. I'm willing to provide whatever is preferable, but it offends my English-teacher/copy editor sensibilities (smile) to leave a book without paragraphs. smile Cindy And as for people who can see that useBookshare, print books use a blank line to denote paragraphs so why would they want it indented?____________________________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! oneSearch: Finally, mobile search that gives answers, not web links. http://mobile.yahoo.com/mobileweb/onesearch?refer=1ONXIC To unsubscribe from this list send a blank Email to bksvol-discuss-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxxput the word 'unsubscribe' by itself in the subject line.
