Thank you for your response. I saved your scanning tips email from a while back and plan to see exactly what you do. Has Bookshare ever given us statistics on how many people have subscriptions who don't either use braille or screen readers? In other words, how many users are there where this font issue is important? Jill ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mayrie ReNae" <mayrierenae@xxxxxxxxx>

Hi Jill,

The only reason this book's fonts are a problem is because they are
different enough that when one scans cleanly, the other scans with many
errors. One font is a standard font. The other looks like the font created by using a very old typewriter. This second font requires using the setting to recognized degraded text, while the first font is "normal" text. This is
not a common occurrence in books, as far as I've seen.

I do regulate the font within each book that I scan, as far as
making it all the same size. I do this, because in most cases, scanned
books are full of many sizes of fonts. This makes for very difficult
reading among folks who use their eyes to read at all, which is everyone
using bookshare except we totally blind folks. Since it takes only 30
seconds, tops, to do, I'm happy to make everyone have a less difficult
reading experience. But that is just my feeling on the subject.

Hope I answered your question sufficiently.

Mayrie

Mary, I scan with Kurzweil and I don't concern myself with fonts. If it is
reading correctly, I assume the scan is okay. Am I missing something
important here?

Hi Christina,

Thought I'd warn you. "The Art of Detection" by Laurie R. King is a
book I started to work on and kind of bailed on. It is written in two
separate fonts. So, just when you think you've got your scanner settings
set right, the font will change, and you'll need to readjust. It isn't
unmanageable, if you scan and read a few pages at a time as you scan.
You'll end up, probably, with two sets of scanning settings that will work
and have to switch between them. I just wasn't patient enough to do the
work. Just thought I'd tell you what you can expect with that one, so
that
you can be prepared for the kind of work it will take.

I really like that series of books, so will be thrilled and pay
homage to your patience once that one is in the collection! Thanks for
taking on a bear of a book! You're awesome!

Mayrie

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Planning to Scan

Hello, everyone. I have some very good friends who are letting me borrow
some of their books to scan and add to Bookshare. I plan to scan the
following:
Guardians of the West by David Eddings
Player of Games by Iain Banks
The Tides of Time by John Brunner
Passage by Lois McMaster Bujold
The Art of Detection by Laurie R. King
The Jack Vance Treasury by Jack Vance
Night's Daughter by Tanith Lee
A Dirty Job by Christopher
Dragon Prince by Melanie Rawn.

It's obviously going to take me a while to get through all of these so if
any of you want to validate any of these or want to read any of them right
away, please let me know and I'll do those first.
Thanks.
Christina
