[bksvol-discuss] Pre-Announcement: New Bookshare Members Are Coming - Because You Get to Offer them a Free Month's Membership!

Bookshare Volunteers,
Tomorrow we will announce details of a chance for volunteers to win the
opportunity to have books of their choice donated and added to the Bookshare
collection. We will announce a contest around recruiting new Bookshare members.
Today I wanted to recap for you a few of the things we have done recently to
make Bookshare more appealing to those who have been sitting on the sidelines
not quite ready to join:
* Bookshare Support is adding a new staff person to help members get the most
out of their membership
* Several sections of the Bookshare web site have updated content
* The number of new books in the collection has increased by the thousands over
the past few months
* We have systematically been upgrading the quality of existing books and
filling in gaps in series
* 15 books from the Wish List have been ordered and will be added
* All the books volunteers recommended in the name of potential members have
been purchased and are being processed
In the background to make things easier on you as volunteers:
* The ability to search on any book quality has been added
* In-house volunteers have added synopses to hundreds of PQ books and sent them
into the library
* Rick Costa has done an extensive reworking of the online volunteer Scanning
and Proofreading Manual
* Volunteer Marie McGarry is updating the content of Chapter 3 on scanning and
then the manual will be added to the Bookshare library
* Various component tasks have been completed which will eventually result in
searches that some day will easily distinguish between different editions of
books such as those with and without image descriptions
The goal of the event we will announce tomorrow will be to recruit new members
- but not everyone is a recruiter. Some will want to support the cause behind
the scenes.
So I would like to ask those volunteers to support our recruiters by making a
special push from now to the end of the year to add more reasons for a new
member to join:
* If you have been meaning to get back to scanning or proofing that book, pick
it up and get back into a rhythm
* If there is a gap in a series or a series that you want to be Captain for,
now is the time to make your move
* If you are love seeing book quality improve pick a handful of Fair or Good
quality books to move on up to Excellent
* If you have been sitting on a good idea that would make the scanning or
proofing process easier, let us know about it
