Jamie,

Books must have page breaks in order to be accepted as of Spring 2005.

Some TXT files have page breaks, and some do not. That's because some
software, like MS Word, strips page breaks when it saves a file as TXT, and
other software doesn't. Therefore, you must look in the file in order to
determine whether a TXT file has page breaks.

Immediately converting to RTF when you open a file in Word will retain page
breaks, if they were there in the first place.

Files can have page breaks, page numbers, both, or neither. It depends on
what's been done to the file and if page numbers were in the print book to
start with.

It's important not to strip page numbers if they are in the file because
they are used by DAISY to havigate to a given page and occasionally
referenced by the reader when discussing the book with someone else or in a
class. Bookshare will assume the first page is page 1 if it doesn't find
any page numbers, but that's not always how the print book is numbered since
publishers often start numbering with page 1 at the prologue or chapter 1,
so it's important not to strip page numbers as part of stripping the entire
header using software like K-1000 or OpenBook.

The confusion over page breaks in regards to TXT files is why TXT files will
no longer be accepted from volunteers as of the end of this month.

This probably doesn't answer all your questions related to the subject, so
feel free to ask others.

HTH

Gerald

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Questions

I am a new volunteer but I am familiar with the
bookshare program because a friend of mine is a
bookshare subscriber.

I have been reading in the tips and also in the other
sections and I have a couple of questions.

Initially, it looked like to validate a book you
mostly had to verify the book was complete, and verify
the copyright information and then, if desired, clean
up any scanning errors.

But as I read more into jbrownell website, it looks
like lots of books get rejected because they are
missing page breaks. Can someone clarify that for me?
One book that I downloaded to validate was a txt file,
and thus it would not have page breaks, right? Even
though I converted it to rtf, it still would not have
page breaks, right?

Another book I downloaded did not have page numbers.
Without page numbers it would not have page breaks, or
am I not understanding the validation process
correctly?
