First, there is absolutely nothing wrong with making corrections as you read
through the book you're proofing! It's probably safer as many folks try to
do mass search-and-replace operations and sometimes end up with some auful
messes that can't always be easily corrected. Since we expect proofers to
read the book they're proofing front to back, you might as well correct as
you go.
Look in the K1000 manual for a section called "Searching for Special
Characters". K1000 doesn't have as many codes as Word does, but there are a
few handy ones.
\t for a tab character
\n for a new line. Kurzweil considers a new line the same as a paragraph
mark, which makes this somewhat less flexible than Word.
You can also search for instances of bold or italics using the drop-down
menu in the search feature. I have my reading voice in K1000 set to a higher
pitch when it reads text that has an attribute like bold, italics or
underline. There are a few other things you can search for in this menu.
K1000 also accepts "alt codes" such as "alt plus 0151" to search for an
em-dash (or long dash). Several of us use these codes so if you don't know
how or need a code for something, just ask here.

I've been reading through both the K1000 manual and the Bookshare
Proofreading manual for volunteers with an eye to possibly doing some
proofreading for Bookshare.
I can see that with the right settings for K1000 I would be aware of, and be
able to make necessary formatting changes as described in the proofreading
manual. I can even tell where tabs and blank lines are and delete them.
The one thing I didn't see was a way to globally search for a character such
as a tab or page break or blank line and then replace that character with
another; as one would if replacing all tabs with spaces.
Is there a way to do this, or would it be acceptable to just read along in
the book and make changes as I saw them.
I just want to make sure that I understand what I would be required to do
and that I would be able to do it properly.
