Julie Carpenter is the Collection Development Manager for Bookshare. This information was underneath her name in her original email. smile. Julie is the person she says she is, she works for Benetech, and she really is the Collection Development Manager.

Concerning what's going on, Carrie posted the following yesterday: "We're all trying to figure out some way to make life easier for everyone without violating any copyright laws. We were going to have a meeting about it today, but it got postponed till tomorrow. I sure can't think of any pleasant way around this impasse, but maybe someone else at work can suggest something. That's why you haven't heard anything from us."

While I am as frustrated as anyone over this apparent change, and how the original communication felt like it came out of the blue, I don't think there's any need to go off on wild blue sky conspiracy theories worrying about identity spoofing, or that underlings are being sent to yell at volunteers and so forth. smile. (And Ann, please, I wrote that last sentence with my tongue firmly in cheek as a humorous tweak, not anything else, OK?)

I'm surmising from the original email from Julie and now from Carrie's update that there has been a problem, that's come from somewhere, that's raised concerns about sharing of any type, including what we've been told for years is fine to do.

Carrie has told us the Bookshare is working on it. So it seems to me that we should for now just wait for new information on what we can and cannot do regarding helping each other out by sharing individual pages as needed, even though it sure puts a stick in the wheels of proofreading if you need a page.

Hi all,

Robert, that's the whole point of this discussion. Somebody somewhere has been made upset, and so I suspect detailed an underling to yell at the volunteers without considering the effect this would cause. We don't know if it's still OK, or at least we're confused about whether it's OK or not. Frankly, I don't see how the mission can be accomplished without some copying of pages back and forth. However, those of us in the East will just have to wait till Benetech staff are at the office and they can sort all this out. Good Heavens, talk about crying "fire!" in a crowded theater.
