Are the hyphens really necessary and what benefit or purpose do they have? I find that when entering an ISBN into a search engine it works a lot better to leave them out. Also, on occasion I have to memorize an ISBN for a short time to fill it in somewherre and I memorize it better if I ignore the hyphens and break the numbers in my mind into groups of three.
