I have scanned and validated several books on Bookshare but as I read this list I am concerned about assumptions I've made. I have always read fully books I've submitted to Bookshare because they have been the kind of books I've wanted to read myself. In validating books, I started by reading the books from cover to cover. Realizing how slow this process was and how some books seemed to sit in the unvalidated state for a long time, I soon began validating by checking spelling, page numbers, and by trying to determine whether the book looked complete. My concern is that in validating in this way, I was assuming someone, presumably the scanner, had already read the book and deemed it suitable for the collection. For this reason, I've never changed a rating or tried to improve on a synopsis. My concern is that it appears we might actually have books appearing on Bookshare which no one, either in the scanning or validation process has read. Should we have a place for the submitter to say whether he has scanned and read or simply scanned a book so that the validator can determine whether reading the book cover to cover is in order, or simply verifying the good work of the scanner is sufficient? Can someone also clarify for me the stance of Bookshare on one validating his/her own work? I see that it can be done, and have done it myself on several occasions, but the article from Bookshare, as I read it, seems to encourage and discourage the practice in the same statement. Any guidance will be appreciated. Gary Wunder gwunder@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
