The American Foundation for the Blind National Literacy Center Presents Scanning for Access October 6-8, 2005 Converting printed documents into properly formatted braille or large print can be one of the most challenging job tasks for individuals who serve persons who are blind or visually impaired. For this reason, the American Foundation for the Blind National Literacy Center presents Scanning for Access. This two and one-half day hands-on workshop will take a detailed look at the technology necessary to scan a print document, convert it to an electronic file, and produce the document in braille or large print. Various software and hardware solutions will be identified and the benefits and limitations of each solution will be demonstrated. Upon completing this hands-on workshop, participants will: * Understand major differences between mainstream and assistive optical character recognition (OCR) software * Have the knowledge necessary to configure, scan and perform file management operations with at least one mainstream and one assistive OCR application * Explain advantages and disadvantages of several brands and types of scanners * Become familiar with Duxbury braille translation software * Have the knowledge necessary to produce a variety of commonly used document formatting (fill in the blank questions, multiple choice questions, etc.). * Be able to perform basic troubleshooting techniques on all hardware and software covered in the workshop This workshop will be held October 6-8, 2005, at the American Foundation for the Blind National Literacy Center in Atlanta, GA.
