I have to agree with Jim. I have both installed on my system and have had no problems, although my OB doesn't talk to me anymore since I installed K1000. No big loss, in my humble opinion. Yes, their tech support line is an 800 number; imagine that! he said sarcastically. As far as the Neospeech goes: I have found it good for messages, but somewhat slow in terms of responsiveness for reading text using the arrow keys. Also, I think you should make sure you use disc cleanup and defrag your hard drive before installing it. I hadn't done that, and it slowed way down after a couple of weeks of using the demo version. After doing these things, it went back to normal; so I think you should just do that before installing K1000 to avoid any problems with the program slowing down on you later. The Neospeech engine, especially, does take more resources than a lot of other things and good disc maintenance should ensure that it is as quick as possible - if you choose to use it that is. Yes, also, join the list. Lots of good, knowledgeable people there, including people who actually work for the company.

Hi Rick,

I think you made a very wise choice.

I have both Open Book and Kurzweil on my machine, but I never use OB any more.
I would suggest you join the Kurzweil list. You will find many coaches there. Also the tech support is fantastic, and with an eight hundred number.

I just ordered K-1000.
It will be groceries of peanut butter for awhile. Well maybe some hummus.
Hopefully some of you who use it on this list may be available for some
questions.

One I have already is whether I would be best to uninstall the OpenBook
software. I don't see why. But I would rather avoid any problems. I have
enough usually. (smile)

I was reading on my bookport group discussion list the other day that in
K-1000 you can actually prepare and send audio daisy files directly to the
bookport. This will be pretty nice. I've also learned of the neo speech
synthesizer voices that k-1000 has and that they have 2 new very human
sounding voices, Kate and Paul in the version 10 that is on its way.

But of course the biggest reason I have decided to get k-1000 is the
enhanced editing capability and features that will make my bookshare
volunteering even more fun and maybe even less time consuming! So how about
it, will anyone want to be my coach?

Thanks.
Rik

Ah, Monica, you and everyone else using OB is wishing for that update. this

is why I'm thinking of switching my allegiance to Kurzweil if I can scrape
up enough cash. Maybe if all of us chain ourselves to the doors they'd
start listening? <sigh>
