Hi all,

<smiling> When I saw Bob's message, my mind, as it usually does, presented me with a song, i.e. "Why do you do the things you do?" from Man of La Mancha.

Well, I volunteer because like most of us who grew up blind in the fifties and sixties, access to books, any books, was limited. NLS had some books, but they were in many volumes. The recorded books were better, but they were limited. Any books my sighted friends were reading never got into the NLS collection until way after everyone had read the book and discussed it. Sometimes, it was even after the movie came out.

Then I had my house to contend with. Print books in every room, every single room including the bathrooms. I couldn't read those books. I wanted to, but I couldn't.

Then, the reading machine came out in the late seventies and early eighties. I remember going by paratransit downtown to scan a book I wanted to read on a huge, reading machine.

When Bookshare came out, I thought how wonderful! I joined up right away. I wanted to read books, new books, fun books and informative books. Then, after I had been a member for a couple of years, I thought I could help to make reading books possible for someone else, so I started volunteering. I am continually amazed by the fact that Bookshare has over fifty thousand books now. I think that is so fantastic! It gives me a thrill to know I'm making that count larger!
