Hi Dave & others:
I will just add my 2 cents, to the Arkenstone history:
1. Benidict came about at the time of sale of Arkenstone to Freedom Scientific. 2. Ruby was the last version of OpenBook (version 4) that was totally Arkenstone. I believe Arkenstone did most of the programming, if not all for OpenBook version 5 but FS handled the distribution and support.

Jill,

That's Openbook format not open.
Openbook still uses an .ARK extension for files saved in its native format even though it's been years since it started out its evolution as the Arkanstone Reader.

As a side note, that's where many of us first heard ofJim Fruchterman, as the Arkanstone Reader and early versions of Openbook were his baby. He sold Openbook to Freedom Scientific a number of years ago, and I don't know if Benidict came about before or after that point, but Bookshare certainly came after.

The Arkanstone Reader was a combo hardware/software package for IBM compatibles running under MS-DOS, and it was a major advancement over the KRM-400, which was its competition at the time. I believe I still have my Arkanstone card around here somewhere as I seem to have difficulty throwing things away, but I was able to finally part with my old KRM-400 last summer as it was huge, didn't work, and nobody wanted it.

The above was from memory, so of course it is subject to error, and I believe there was also an interim step of the Ruby scanning software in there somewhere, but as Jim monitors the list from time to time, maybe he can set things straight where I've drifted off course. After all Jim, it's not that we're inquisitive, it's just that we are plain nosey! Pratik could probably help with the history, as he is another old timer. Boy doesn't this make me feel old.

And all this just because you asked about .ARK files ...
I guess this is why I don't e-mail that much, it's because I'm too darned long winded!

Dave
