I have a CanoScan, and I submit scans with it regularly. I don't have a document feeder either and just hold the book on the scanner. What model of CanoScan do you have? I'd be happy to help you with optimizing scans if you like so you can submit books if you want to. It took me awhile to learn how to get really clear scans because I didn't understand all of the options in my scanning software at first. I found out that the CanoScan scanners do a beautiful job with OCR once you know what you're doing. (smile)
As for a summary page on Bookshare itself, I don't think there is one. Will you be using a program like Kurzweil to work on books, or will you be using Microsoft Word? The process is similar for all programs in that you make sure the book is complete, and you correct any obvious errors you find. Some of us do a spell check and then read the whole book. Others do a spell check and then spot check several pages in the book to make sure the scan has gone well. We make sure there are page breaks and that there is copyright information in the book. If the copyright information is present and the book is in good shape, we save it to rtf format if it isn't already in that format. Then we go to the step 2 page on Bookshare and upload the book. The description makes validation sound more complicated than it actually is. This list is here to support you and help you learn as you go. After you do a couple of validations, it'll be like riding a bike or singing a song. You'll know how to do it and can focus on enjoying yourself as you read books you like.
