You do need something written above a chapter number or name to protect it.
Blank lines alone don't work.
If you don't want the written thing that does the job to be the page number,
which is all you need, you can put in other words like this
example
blank line
chapter
blank line
Heidi Goes To the City
or
blank line
Part
blank line
Seventeen
blank line
or
blank line
Section
Blank line

The method I use is
page break
blank line
page number
blank line
chapter number or name
blank line
text
I use the page number because as I've said, I move all page numbers to the
top left margin of the page anyway. By page number, I mean the exact page
number of that page in the print book. I also number pages of books which
have none. This helps readers tremendously to navigate a book.
One volunteer, one I wish I'd have thanked, explained that moving a page
number to a different location or numbering blank pages doesn't violate
copyright. As a lifelong book lover, believe me when I tell you the
placement of page numbers is either eye candy for sighted readers, or an
arbitrary lay out policy of a publisher and doesn't impact the intent of the
content.
Any of the above will protect chapter heads.
Cindy, I know how carefully you proof books as you go along, so I imagine
putting in the page number sandwich with the number or another word like
chapter or section or part as filling, and a blank line above and below it
really won't slow you down, and the results are wonderful. The reader will
se just what you meant them to see, the name or number of every chapter.

I'm starting to validate a new book. Am I correct in
interpreting the recent posts correctly that I don't
have to put anything on the line above the chapter
number, which is the written word, even if the page
numbers are all at the bottom? Or is that a safe thing
to do only when the page numbers are at the top of the
page?
