Carrie,

Do you see a setting which will use page breaks instead of section breaks?
There?s probably one there since both K-1000 and OpenBook don?t produce
section breaks when using FineReader. The reason I?m asking is that I tried
one of your books with WordPad, and it discarded all of the section breaks.
That may be why Gustavo?s been kicking back several books lately asking if
people are removing page breaks during validation. If you don?t know of a
setting, then maybe someone could ask Stephen Baum how they are handling the
issue since they are producing books without section breaks with FineReader.

Gerald

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] discovered the section break solution

I figured out that pesky problem with extraneous section breaks being
present in the Bookshare scans. When you bring up Finereader, there's a tab
called Tools. Click on it, then click on Options, then click on Formats
Settings and then click the far left tab for RTF/DOC/Word XML. The 'retain
layout' drop-down list has three options:

Original layout

Columns, tables, paragraphs, fonts

Tables, paragraphs, fonts

The first option, original layout, puts in those extra section breaks and
extra column breaks. The second option, columns etc., puts in extra section
breaks but not column breaks. The last option, tables etc., leaves all the
extra breaks out. YES!!!! I am redoing the 14 books I OCRed yesterday, and
will redo any books that someone requests me to, if the books are still here
in the office (they should be, but sometimes they disappear mysteriously).
My abject apologies for not recognizing this bug earlier. It looks like the
option was never set when Finereader 8 was set up originally.

My thanks to Jennifer for pointing me in the right direction! Carrie
