Jamie, try this: log on to bookshare, go to the volunteer section and go to the "my checked out books page" and see if it's listed there as a book that you've already checked out. If it is, you can click on the rtf link for it on that page and download it.
I've had exactly what you are describing happen many times to me, but it's when I try to checkout books in the wee hours of the morning, between about 2 am and 5 am. When it happens, the book never downloads to me, but the Bookshare system thinks it has, removes it from the checkout list, and assigns it to me and the only way I can find the silly thing is to go to the "my checked out books" page.
