Submitters here is an easy way to know if you are getting extraneous linebreaks.
Go to the beginning of a line. Use your arrow key and go back one space. If it says "end of line" you are getting extraneous linebreaks.
There is a option in many scanning packages which speaks about retaining end of line breaks. In most cases, as Mary has explained, you do not want to retain line breaks.
